The THREAD Workshop is designed as an interactive and collaborative event focused on the potential of artificial intelligence and real-time digital technologies to revitalize the landscape of traditional embroidery and cultural heritage. Co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, this initiative bridges the rich artisanal traditions of the Western Balkans with cutting-edge technological innovation.
The brainstorming session will bring together artisans, designers, and researchers to delve into the core mechanics of generative AI, machine learning, and real-time capture systems. Participants will discuss their applicability in transforming historical motifs—the “original language of the pixel”—into dynamic, contemporary designs while respecting and preserving the intricate logic of traditional stitches.
Through cross-border collaboration highlighting the heritage of Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania, attendees will identify how a shared digital platform can augment human craftsmanship. The workshop will specifically address how to capture and preserve complex heritage techniques, generate new creative and economic pathways for the craft to circulate internationally, and empower master artisans where traditional preservation methods fall short.
